Scams Alert — Stay Safe Over the Break

myGovID becomes myID

With the rebranding of myGovID to myID on 13 November 2024, scammers have seized the opportunity to target unsuspecting users. Fraudulent emails and SMS messages are circulating, urging recipients to "reconfirm" their details through malicious links. These links lead to fake websites designed to steal personal information, such as myGov credentials.

The good news? No action is required from legitimate users regarding the myID rebranding. The transition is already complete, and the functionality of the app remains unchanged.

How to Stay Safe

As the summer holidays approach, it's important to remain extra vigilant against scammers. Here are some key tips to protect yourself:

  1. Avoid Clicking Unsolicited Links: The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and other government agencies will never send unsolicited emails or SMS messages with clickable links.
  2. Verify Communications: If you're unsure about the legitimacy of a message, contact the ATO directly at 1800 008 540.
  3. Access Services Securely: Always type official URLs like my.gov.au or ato.gov.au directly into your browser instead of relying on links in messages.
  4. Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect a scam, report it to the ATO to help protect others from falling victim.

Why Scammers Target the ATO

The ATO remains one of the most impersonated government agencies in Australia, making it a frequent target for fraudsters. This trend has continued with the recent rebranding to myID, underscoring the need for heightened awareness during this time.

Remember: You don’t need to set up a new account or reconfirm any details due to the myID transition. Any such request is a scam.

Stay safe over the break, and enjoy a secure and scam-free Christmas and New Year!
